The things I take issue with are how the movie presents the message that the story is romantic and not pedophilic or slightly incestuous. And yes, I realize that Louis Jordan was only ten years older than Leslie Caron and that she was 27 when it was made, but she's presented as very young, like 13-15. In the end, I just feel so sorry for her. She initially refuses Gaston, but then only minutes later says that crushing line, "I'd rather be miserable with you than without you." I don't know what the intention is there, if it's supposed to be funny or that she's reluctantly in love with Gaston, but for me that's horrifying since it seems like she realizes she's backed in a corner and really doesn't have much of a choice. Gaston's song seems like it's meant to be very romantic and that the relationship in the end is supposed to be a lovely, love-conquers-all message of a romantic movie, but Gigi the character has almost no agency in the whole thing. The movie could have tried to say something about despicable people in high society, the way Gatsby does, but it never tries to really present the characters as unlikable, other than Gigi's song about the Parisians and the song at the party where everyone is judging each other (definitely the highlight of the film and my favorite moment) and those are more general comments on the whole society. I'm sure that kind of thing was common in the Belle Epoque, and in a lot of places throughout history, but just because it was common doesn't make it right. It went from "this is okay and kind of cheesy" to "Oh, oh hell no" in a few minutes, how the song goes over things about how she's filled out in her dresses, and meets Gaston's approval of not being boring. His relationship with her before seemed more parental or brotherly, not romantic, and not even the clichéd "I hate you so much because I love you" in romcoms. It wasn't until Gaston's song about falling in love with her that I thought the movie took a gross turn. Most of the characters were douches, but I didn't care. I rarely get offended watching movies, and while I watched about 3/4 of Gigi, I thought it was okay. I won't argue that the movie is not without its charm as it's very colorful and has some funny moments. It's not on the level of A Serbian Film where it has no redeeming qualities. Movie tastes are incredibly subjective, so there's nothing wrong with enjoying the film if you do like it.
